Lake Norman Sprint Triathlon Race Recap: Year Three, New Milestones

There’s something special about returning to the same race year after year—and the Lake Norman Triathlon continues to deliver every single time. This marked my third year lining up at the start of our one local race of the year and it never disappoints.

A Race That Never Misses

First off, credit where it’s due—the race organizers consistently put on a seamless event. From packet pickup to course support to the finish line energy, everything feels dialed in. It’s one of those races where you can just focus on racing, knowing everything else is taken care of.

Race Day Conditions: Couldn’t Ask for Better

We were treated to an absolutely beautiful day. Calm water, clear skies, and just enough warmth to feel like summer is around the corner without being overwhelming. It set the tone for a strong, confident race from start to finish.

The Bike: Hills, Meet New Tri Bike

The bike course is no joke—rolling hills that demand both patience and power. This year felt especially exciting as it was my first time racing this course on my new tri bike. There’s always a bit of a learning curve with new equipment, but it handled the terrain incredibly well. Staying aero on the flatter sections and managing effort on the climbs made a noticeable difference.

The Run: A New Challenge

Just when you think you know a course, it changes. The updated run route added some extra elevation, making it a bit more honest (and a bit more painful). It was the kind of run where pacing really mattered—go out too hard, and those hills would come back to bite. But it also made the finish feel that much more earned.

A Special First: Racing for Team IOS

This race marked my first time competing as part of Team IOS, which made the day even more meaningful. There’s something powerful about racing with a team behind you—it adds an extra layer of motivation and pride.

The Results: Progress Pays Off

Crossing the finish line, I knew it had been a strong day—but the results made it even sweeter:

  • 🥇 1st in Age Group

  • 🥉 3rd Woman Overall

  • ⏱️ 6-minute improvement from last year

That kind of progress doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s always rewarding to see the work come together on race day.

Final Thoughts

Three years in, and the Lake Norman Triathlon continues to be a staple in my season. It’s the perfect mix of challenge, organization, and community. Whether you’re a seasoned racer or newer to the sport, this is one that deserves a spot on your calendar.
