Sleep: The Most Underrated Part of Your Training Plan

If you’re a triathlete, chances are you’ve spent plenty of time thinking about your training plan.
You’ve scheduled the long rides, planned your brick workouts, counted your carbs and maybe even tracked your training load.
But there’s one part of your training plan that’s easy to overlook: Sleep.
It’s not flashy. It doesn’t earn you a PR. And there’s no medal for getting eight hours.
But sleep is when your body gets a chance to recover from everything you’re asking it to do during training.
For an amateur athlete balancing workouts with work, relationships and everything else life throws at you, sleep may be one of the most important recovery tools you have.
Why Does Sleep Matter?
Sleep isn’t simply a period when your body is “off. While you sleep, your body supports immune function, metabolism, cardiovascular health, learning, memory and physical recovery. For athletes, that recovery component is particularly important.
During deep sleep, your body enters a particularly restorative state. Processes involved in tissue repair and recovery occur, and growth hormone is released.
REM sleep is different. Brain activity increases, dreaming is common, and REM plays an important role in learning and memory.
In other words: Sleep is part of the training adaptation process.
You provide the stimulus through your workout. Your body needs adequate recovery—including sleep—to adapt to that stimulus.
One bad night isn’t going to ruin your training. But consistently getting inadequate sleep can make it harder to recover from the training you’re doing.
How Much Sleep Do You Need?
For most adults, 7–9 hours per night is a good target. Athletes may benefit from being toward the higher end of that range, particularly during periods of high training volume, illness, travel or competition.
And remember: time in bed isn’t necessarily time asleep.
If you’re in bed for eight hours but spend 30 minutes awake during the night, you may have gotten closer to 7.5 hours of actual sleep.
That’s where your fitness tracker can be useful.
What Do All Those Sleep Metrics Mean?
If you’ve ever opened your Garmin, Apple Watch, Oura, WHOOP or Fitbit and wondered what all the numbers mean, here’s a quick guide.
Total Sleep
What it means: The estimated amount of time you actually spent asleep.
This is one of the simplest and most useful metrics. If you’re consistently getting six hours when you need eight, that’s worth addressing.
Focus on your average and trends, rather than whether you got 7:58 versus 8:04 one night.
Sleep Efficiency
What it means: The percentage of your time in bed that you actually spent asleep.
For example, eight hours in bed with 30 minutes awake equals approximately 94% sleep efficiency.
It’s useful for understanding whether you’re actually sleeping during the time you’ve allocated for sleep.
Sleep Stages
Your sleep cycles between three primary stages:
* Light sleep: A normal and necessary part of sleep. Don’t assume “light” means “bad.”
* Deep sleep: The most restorative stage, associated with physical recovery and tissue repair.
* REM sleep: Associated with learning, memory and cognitive recovery.
Your tracker may give you a precise-looking number for each stage, but remember that these are estimates.
Awake Time
What it means: The amount of time your device estimates you were awake during the night.
Brief awakenings are completely normal. What matters more is whether you’re experiencing long or frequent periods of wakefulness that disrupt your sleep.
Sleep Latency
What it means: How long it takes you to fall asleep.
Occasional difficulty falling asleep is normal.
Consistently spending 30–60+ minutes trying to fall asleep may be worth investigating.
Resting Heart Rate
Your heart rate typically decreases during sleep, so many wearables track your overnight heart rate.
For athletes, the trend can be useful. If your normal sleeping heart rate is 52 bpm and it’s suddenly 60 for several nights, it could be a sign of accumulated training stress, illness, alcohol, travel or simply poor recovery.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
HRV measures the variation in time between heartbeats.
Many wearables use overnight HRV as an indicator of recovery and autonomic nervous system balance.
Your personal baseline matters much more than comparing your number to another athlete.
A sudden change from your normal range may be worth paying attention to, particularly when combined with other signs of fatigue.
Respiratory Rate
What it means: Your average number of breaths per minute while sleeping.
Like resting heart rate, it’s most useful when viewed against your normal baseline. A noticeable change over several nights can sometimes be another clue that your body is under stress or that you’re getting sick.
Sleep or Recovery Score
This is your wearable’s attempt to combine multiple metrics into one easy-to-understand number.
But don’t treat an 82 as meaning you are “82% recovered.”
It’s an algorithmic summary, and the formulas differ between devices. Think of it as a dashboard light—not a scientific verdict.
How Accurate Are Fitness Trackers?
This is an important caveat. Your Garmin, Apple Watch, Oura or WHOOP is not a sleep laboratory. Sleep researchers use tools such as polysomnography to measure brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity and other physiological signals. Consumer wearables primarily estimate sleep using movement, heart rate and other signals.
So when your watch tells you that you got 1 hour and 12 minutes of deep sleep, it doesn’t actually know that with laboratory-level precision.
That’s okay.
Use your tracker to identify patterns, not obsess over individual numbers. One night of low deep sleep isn’t necessarily meaningful.
Two weeks of declining sleep duration, elevated resting heart rate and suppressed HRV? That’s more interesting.
Your Triathlete Sleep Scorecard
Instead of focusing on one metric, ask yourself five questions:
1. Am I getting enough sleep?
Are you consistently getting 7–9 hours?
2. Is my schedule reasonably consistent?
Does your body know roughly when it’s time to sleep and wake up?
3. How do I feel?
Do you wake up feeling reasonably rested?
4. What are my trends showing?
Are your sleep duration, HRV, resting heart rate and respiratory rate relatively normal for you?
5. Does my recovery match my training load?
If training volume and intensity are increasing while your sleep and recovery metrics are deteriorating, that’s worth paying attention to.
Make Sleep Part of Your Training Plan
You don’t need a perfect nighttime routine. Start with the basics:
* Schedule sleep like you schedule training. If you have a 5:30 a.m. workout, work backward from your wake-up time.
* Keep your sleep schedule reasonably consistent.
* Create a wind-down routine to give your brain time to transition from work and screens to sleep.
* Pay attention to caffeine and alcohol, both of which can affect sleep.
* Don’t sacrifice sleep to squeeze in every workout. Sometimes the better training decision is to sleep an extra 90 minutes instead of forcing a workout on five hours of sleep.
The Bottom Line
Triathlon training is a constant balance between stress and recovery.
We tend to focus on the stress side: more miles, more intervals, more watts, more workouts.
But recovery is where adaptation happens—and sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools we have.
So the next time you’re tempted to squeeze in another workout, another episode or another hour of scrolling before bed, remember:
Your training doesn’t end when you finish your workout.
Sometimes, the next step toward becoming a stronger athlete is simply going to bed.
And if your fitness tracker tells you that you got a great night’s sleep?
Great.
But the real goal isn’t a perfect sleep score.
It’s waking up ready to Tri Your Way.
