Race Review: YMCA Charlotte Corporate Cup

Some races are the big goals you train months for. Others are just for fun or practice, fit into the middle of a training block, and sometimes end up being surprisingly memorable.

The YMCA Charlotte Corporate Cup was one of those races for me this year — a fun, community-focused event that turned into a special day for a few unexpected reasons.

A Team Win for Duke Energy

One of the coolest parts of this race is that it’s not just about individual results. The event is designed as a corporate team competition, where companies across Charlotte compete for points through participation and performance.

This year, Team Duke Energy took home the Corporate Cup for the second year in a row— which made the whole morning even more fun. As captain, there’s something unique about cheering each other on and contributing to a team result in a sport that’s usually so individual.

It felt less like a pressure-filled race and more like a celebration of community and fitness.

Going Into the Race With Uncertainty

To be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going into the race.

Recently, I’ve been in a bit of a training rut. Too much intensity, not enough true recovery, and a general feeling that my body hasn’t been absorbing training the way I’d like. I also didn’t approach this race like a peak performance effort. There was no taper, and it was very much a “let’s see what happens” kind of start line mindset.

Sometimes that’s actually the best place to be.

A Personal Breakthrough: Sub-20 5K

Despite the uncertainty, the race ended up being one of the most rewarding runs I’ve had in a long time.

I crossed the finish line under 20 minutes for the 5K, something that had been a long-time personal goal for me.

Breaking that barrier felt incredibly meaningful — especially because it happened on a day when expectations were low and the focus was simply on running hard and enjoying the race.

It was a reminder that fitness is often there even when you don’t feel like everything is perfect in training.

Age Group Wins (Twice!)

Another highlight of the morning was sharing the experience with my mom.

She happened to be in town and decided to join the race as well, and it turned into a pretty special family moment — because she also won her age group.

Seeing her succeed and celebrate her race made the morning even more memorable. It’s always fun to share races with friends or family, but having both of us walk away with age group wins made it feel extra special.

The Value of a Short Training Race

As triathletes, many of our events are long — Olympic distance, half distance, or longer. But short races like a 5K can be incredibly valuable during a training season.

They’re:

  • A chance to test speed

  • A break from structured training

  • A reminder that racing can just be fun

This race fit perfectly into the schedule as a short training race — something competitive enough to push hard, but low pressure enough to enjoy.

Final Thoughts

The YMCA Charlotte Corporate Cup turned out to be one of those races that checks all the boxes:

  • A fun local event

  • A team victory

  • A personal milestone

  • A shared experience with family

And maybe the biggest takeaway for me was this: even when training feels a little off, you never really know what’s possible on race day.

Sometimes the best performances come when you show up, run your race, and let the results take care of themselves.

Now, time to gear up for my half marathon in 2 weeks ✌🏼
