Last-Minute Decision, Big Reward: My Sun Devil Classic Race Recap

After wrapping up the World Championships in Wollongong, I was convinced my 2025 triathlon season was officially over. My body was tired, my mind was ready for rest, and I had already started mentally shifting into the off-season.

But then, as the post-race glow (and fatigue) started to fade, I came across something that immediately sparked my competitive drive again — the Sun Devil Classic in Arizona. It wasn’t just another local race. This event turned out to be a last-chance qualifier for Age Group World Championships next year, filling the gap left by the cancellation of Sprint Triathlon Nationals.

And suddenly, I felt that familiar “what if?” tug.

A Change of Plans

After my less-than-ideal Olympic performance in Milwaukee at Age Group Nationals, I knew deep down I had unfinished business. That race had tested me — between the brutal heat, unpredictable weather, and mental strain, it wasn’t the result I’d hoped for.

So when I learned about the Sun Devil Classic, I realized I had to give it one more shot to qualify for next year’s Worlds. The only catch? The race was just a week away. But I got my gear back out, booked my flights and hotel, and got my mind back into race mode.

Race Day: Channeling Experience and Lessons Learned

The energy at the Sun Devil Classic was electric — smaller race thansmaller than Worlds, but full of competitors chasing one last goal for the season.

From the moment I hit the water, I could feel how much I’d learned and grown this year. I swam confidently, transitioned efficiently, and focused on controlling what I could — pace, hydration, and mindset.

I thought back to Milwaukee and remembered the lessons that race had taught me:

  • Adapt to the conditions. It was warm in Arizona, but manageable. I adjusted my pacing early to avoid overheating.

  • Stay hydrated. I carried the right amount of fluids this time — no more running out mid-bike.

  • Race with joy. I reminded myself to have fun, to smile, and to soak it all in. That mindset shift made all the difference.

By the time I crossed the finish line, I felt proud — not just of the effort, but of the growth that got me there.

A Season’s Unexpected Ending

When results came in, I was shocked and thrilled to find out I had qualified for Worlds next year!

In just a week’s notice, a spontaneous decision turned into one of the most meaningful race experiences of my season. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best opportunities come when you least expect them — and that resilience, adaptability, and a little bit of courage can go a long way.

So while I thought my 2025 season had ended in Wollongong, the Sun Devil Classic reminded me that the journey never really stops — it just evolves. And now, I’m heading into the off-season with new motivation, fresh perspective, and an exciting goal for next year.

Takeaway

Sometimes the races that aren’t planned become the ones that define your season.

If you ever find yourself doubting whether to take one more shot — do it. You never know what might happen when you trust your gut, pack your bags, and go for it.
